FA widen investigation into FIFA corruption

The English FA has widened its investigations into allegations of corruption that, if you believe officials at the FA, have tainted the recent bidding process for the World Cup in 2018. The FA have apparently send out letters to members of the team responsible for the England bid in order to find out any proof or evidence surrounding Fifa members falling foul of the rules, and even the law, throughout the course of the bidding process.

The rather unfortunate situation regarding the corruption claims in connection with the World Cup in 2018 began when Lord Triesman stated that several executive committee members of Fifa had bribed him financially in return for their backing of England’s bid to host the World Cup finals.

Shortly after the claims were made, the FA appointed an independent QC to look over the evidence to see if there was any proof that the named members of Fifa, vice-president Jack Warner, Brazilian Ricardo Teixeira, and Thai Worawi Makudi among others, did in fact use bribes in return for votes.

However, that same lawyer has since decided to widen the investigation into the corruption, which suggests that bribes may not have been the only wrongdoing committed by Fifa members during the bidding process. The findings are set to be revealed on Friday the 27th of May, at which point Fifa will surely have some explaining to do, whether or not the accusations turn out to be true.

With the next couple of weeks seeing Fifa undertake a vote for president, it’s not really surprising that after recent events, the FA have decided not to take part in the vote for president, due to a lack of faith in the accountability of the Fifa body. For over ten years now, Sepp Blatter has been in charge of Fifa, but Qatar’s Mohammed Bin Hammam will provide him with tough competition this time around, particularly in light of the fact that Qatar will host the World Cup in 2022.

Beckham praises title-winning United

David Beckham has come to the defence of Manchester United’s 2011 title-winning team by stating his belief that the current squad is one of the club’s best ever. With Sir Alex Ferguson leading his Red Devils to a record-breaking 19th Premier League title this season, Manchester United holding off a late surge from Chelsea to be crowned champions, the club have nevertheless come under fire for being a little less attack-minded than previous United teams more full of flair and creativity.

Beckham, however, believes that the proof of this United team’s quality lies both in their unbeaten home record this season in the league and in the trophies they have already won and those they now stand a decent chance of winning, with the Red Devils currently preparing to take on Barcelona this weekend at Wembley in the Champions League final.

David Beckham, as all Premier League fans will know, won an array of trophies during his time at the club before he moved abroad to join Spanish giants Real Madrid, the midfielder lifting a total of six Premier League trophies with United. Beckham joined the club as a youngster in 1992 after breaking through the youth team along with a number of other stars including Ryan Giggs and was part of a golden era for the Red Devils. Such is the player’s genuine love for the club that, since leaving, the former England captain has refused to return to England to play for another English club, despite training earlier this year with Spurs to keep his fitness levels up.

With Beckham, who now plays in America for Los Angeles side LA Galaxy and has used his high profile to promote the sport of soccer throughout the USA, revealing that Ferguson is still at the top of his game managerially speaking, despite his advanced age, the footballing legend would appear to be one of a minority who believe that United can upset the odds this weekend by defeating Barcelona at Wembley.

Whether Barcelona, who have dominated in Spain and in Europe so far this season, despite the best efforts of Jose Mourinho and his men at Real Madrid, can be derailed in their ambition to secure another historic Champions League title is, of course, another matter entirely.

Fergie eyes summer trio

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson will do his best to bring three potential signings to Old Trafford this summer. United have already managed to win the Premier League title this season, the Red Devils pulling ahead of bitter rivals Liverpool in the process with their 19th league title in England.

Manchester United will be handed the trophy at their final league game of the campaign against Blackpool on Sunday, before they start looking ahead to the final of the Champions League. Ferguson’s men are set to take on Barcelona at Wembley on May 28th as they look to complete an impressive double this term.

Despite another successful season, the Scottish manager is already looking ahead to the summer transfer market and expects to bring in a few players to the already talented United squad. High up on the 69-year-old’s list is a new goalkeeper, as current shot-stopper Edwin Van der Sar has announced he plans to retire from football at the end of the season in order to spend more time with his family.

Schalke keeper Manuel Neuer has been closely linked with the Manchester outfit, although the German star seems likely to be heading to Bayern Munich over the next few months. Meanwhile, Old Trafford veterans and midfield legends of the club Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes are also approaching the end of their careers and Ferguson is keen to bring a couple of fresh faces into the club.

The former Aberdeen manager has revealed to fans that United do have one or two players in particular in mind this summer, the Scot stating: “We have Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes coming towards the end of their careers, Gary Neville has already retired and Edwin van der Sar is retiring, so there are holes we want to plug up in terms of the safety and security of the team for the next few years. Of course, we have some excellent young players and a lot of them have progressed, which gives us a great, powerful squad. I am looking at maybe three signings which would boost our overall quality in our team”.

West Ham suffer end of season brawl and financial ruin

This week has not been a good one for West Ham United. With the London club suffering relegation from the Premier League after wasting a winning position and ending an entirely winnable fixture with Wigan without a single point, the club’s co-owner David Sullivan has claimed that their end-of-season dinner earlier this week was ruined by the antics of a drunken supporter.

Sullivan has revealed that a drunken West Ham supporter racially abused one of the club’s players, with the player in question widely assumed to be Demba Ba, an incident that set off a mass fight and led to the local police being called to London’s Grosvenor Hotel in the middle of the English capital.

Although this whole thing sounds fairly dramatic, Sullivan has been keen to play the incident down, stating that the press have blown it all out of proportion. With Sullivan desperate for some good press to start involving his players after their relegation, and with the co-owner making a speech at the party that promised fans West Ham’s stay in the Championship will only be a short one, this sort of incident is the last thing the Hammers need at the moment.

This latest incident aside, the fact remains that the state of the club’s finances are causing the owners and the board more than enough headaches. Sullivan, along with the club’s other co-owner David Gold, managed to save the club from the abyss of financial ruin when they took over from the previous Icelandic owners in January 2010, but crippling debts still unfortunately haunt West Ham and threaten to bring an end to their long-term involvement in the English football scene.

That said, with most of their financial worry centred around the ridiculous sums paid out on players’ wages every month, with West Ham apparently behind just seven clubs in the Premier League in terms of cash spent on paying players under their control, they could find that their wage bill looks much smaller next season as the majority of the club’s England and other international hopefuls leave in search of regular football at the top level.

Amongst the first batch of departing players are likely to be Scott Parker and goalkeeper Robert Green when the imminent summer transfer window opens, so West Ham’s short-term stay in the Championship could in fact turn out to be a blessing in disguise for the long-term health of the club’s finances.
