About
So you’ve stumbled onto my website about Venus flytraps. My name is Ryan and I’ve been growing Venus flytraps since I was about 10 years old. Through trial and lots of error, I discovered that they’re not that easy to grow and contrary to what the plant shop says, they are very easy to kill. My first few plants died horrible deaths due to my having zero knowledge of how to maintain them. Through lots of research I’ve learned that I was doing most things wrong and the advice I received from so called ‘experts’ was actually harming my plants. So I did lots of research into the best cultivation practices and over the years I’ve honed my Venus flytrap growing skills to the point where my most recent plants have survived for multiple years without dying
There’s a heap of information out there on Venus flytraps, some good, some bad. But mostly the information is disorganised, difficult to find or the websites are just plain ugly. So this site is my attempt to make learning about Venus flytraps simple, interesting and entertaining.
Some information about me
I have a Master of Science degree and am currently completing a PhD at the University of Otago in New Zealand. My Venus flytraps live in my lab where they’re fed a steady stream of distilled water. Our lab is on the third floor so we rarely get any flies and other bugs are scarce so I normally have to feed them manually with flies I catch or maggots I grow. My flatmates (room mates) seem quite disturbed by my morbid fascination of feeding bugs to my plants and are very happy I don’t grow them at home.
